Last week we saw how Narnia was a kingdom under the control of the white witch. But the white witch wasn’t the rightful ruler – there was another – Aslan (the Lion). Aslan is a picture of Jesus Christ. The bible uses the term lion in referring to Jesus. Aslan's very presence in Narnia begins to melt the snow. Edmund in troubleIn the story we find that Edmund is in trouble. The witch says that Edmund belongs to her. That there is a deep magic, which says that all traitors belong to her, and she has the right to kill them. This has been written on the table of stone. We are told it was the emperor who put this magic into Narnia long ago.
Hebrews 9:22 tells us that without the shedding of blood there can be no forgiveness of sin. Aslan's sacrificeAslan offers his life in exchange for Edmund. The white witch takes up Aslan’s offer, thinking that she will be finally done away with Aslan. Aslan is killed on the stone table. This is a picture of Jesus being crucified upon the cross. Of Jesus standing in our place and taking our sin upon Himself. Death could not hold AslanBut there is a deeper Magic before the dawn of time.
This speaks of how Jesus who knew no sin, couldn’t be held down by death. The bible tells us that Jesus conquered sin and death on the cross, and therefore setting mankind free from sin and death. Let’s always remember that Jesus took our place! |
